Youth Advisory Board (YAB)

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a group of talented future leaders from ages 14 to 21. YAB members join us in our efforts in to educate, enact clean air policies, support advocacy and research. YAB members meet with Breathe staff and the Board of Directors monthly to contribute their voices to Breathe’s lung health, clean air and tobacco prevention projects.

Interested in Joining?

As a YAB member, your activities with Breathe will include:

  • Speaking on behalf of Breathe programs to the media and at events
  • Building new partnerships between Breathe California and our school and community
  • Taking part in creative fundraisers
  • Advocating for clean air and lung health policy
  • Strengthening leadership skills and utilizing these skills in planning meetings and events
  • Working with the Breathe California Board of Directors and staff on issues that impact our mission and vision of clean air, healthy lungs and a tobacco-free future
  • Making our community a healthier place to live

Full Job Description –
The Youth Advisory Board is a leadership opportunity for students to utilize and further develop management, public speaking, and other professional skills. Through active participation by its members the Youth Advisory Board: Expands Youth Involvement to enhance our goals of clean air, healthy lungs, and the elimination of lung disease.

The Youth Advisory Board will represent Northern California youth and will increase youth involvement in all areas of our organization.


  • Be between the ages of 14 and 21 years old
  • Maintain a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Attend monthly Youth Advisory Board meetings which include an orientation meeting and a joint meeting with the Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails Board of Directors. Meetings will be held between August 2015 and May 2016
  • Be able to provide your own transportation to and from Youth Advisory Board Meetings and activities/events
  • Represent Breathe as a non-smoker

Specific Responsibilities:
Serve As Ambassadors To Schools/Communities

  • Support the inclusion of mission-based programs on respective school campuses 
  • Create awareness of our mission, programs and goals among peers and the community in general 

Carry Out The “Youth Voice” For Our Youth Programs

  • Serve as spokespersons for the Breathe mission and projects 
  • Have the opportunity to assist with special events/fundraisers 
  • Work with the Board of Directors and Breathe California Sacramento Region Staff on programs and event developmentadvocacyoutreach/ networking, and all other areas that impact our mission 

Contribute To Breathe Programs/Events

  • Commit to completing all assignments (such as creating social media posts, writing letters, etc.) on time (ample time will be provided!) 
  • Commit to attending at least 75% of the programmatic events, meetings, etc. outside of our regularly monthly meeting times
