A New Beginning
Fall 2016 marks a new beginning for all four of the Los Rios Community College District campuses: American River College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College and Sacramento City College. Students, faculty and staff will be going back to school to a healthier campus. As of August 2016, all campuses will be Smoke, Tobacco and Vape Free.
Smoke, tobacco and vape free campus policies are a growing trend across the country. With the support of the Los Rios Board of Trustees and Board President Deborah Ortiz, colleges in the Los Rios Community College District join a host of other colleges and universities around the state committed to providing a healthy environment for faculty, staff, employees and visitors of each campus. There are now at least 1,483 smoke-free colleges in the United States where smoking is not allowed anywhere on the campus. Of these campuses, 1,137 schools are 100% smoke/tobacco free and prohibit the use of all tobacco products on college or university property.
Public and private institutions of higher education are recognizing the important health and economic benefits of having a Smoke, Tobacco and Vape Free campus policy. In addition to reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, campus policies help to reduce the initiation of tobacco use among young people (18-25) and assist youth and adults who are trying to quit smoking. Smoking within this group is double that to other age groups.
Through the “Learn, Work, Breathe Smoke Free” college campaign, Breathe staff, in partnership with local colleges, universities and trade schools, plans, adopts and implements smoke, tobacco and vape free policies. Breathe staff assists with developing the policies; creating implementation, communication and outreach plans; conducting evaluation for the need and compliance of the policies; as well as providing the necessary education and information for all faculty, staff and students. Breathe Program Manager, Carol Maytum, who is involved on all the campuses states, “the work is challenging, yet rewarding”.
