When high school senior Melissa’s not studying, she plays competitive soccer, hikes, runs, swims, kayaks and travels. Asthma runs in her family, so when she had trouble breathing during soccer practice sprints at age 12, she knew it was probably asthma, and that it was manageable. She now keeps inhalers in all her sports bags and running shoes to remind her to puff before exercise. Half of Melissa’s soccer team has asthma, but they still compete in national tournaments, and Melissa still enjoys long hikes and high-elevation runs. She says asthma is easy to control, once you have the knowledge!
